Graf von Faber-Castell

Graf-von-Faber-Castel is a brand within the Faber-Castell company to create and sell high-end pens, pencils and inks.  Faber-Castell has produced inks for more than two centuries. In 1993, the company created Graf von Faber-Castel which includes a line of fountain pen inks. Around 2014 the current line was expanded to just under 20 colours. Faber-Castell is involved with the specifications of the ink, with production being by German or Austrian ink labs.

The dye-based ink (Carbon Black has different characteristics) comes in a beautiful art deco glass bottle that holds 75 ml.  The heavy glass bottom very nicely catches light as the bottle of ink sits on the desk.

Graf von Faber-Castell notes, with the exception of the Royal Blue colour  their inks are indelible. On some of the boxes, such as Moss Green, the packaging noted the ink held a ISO certification of 12757-2.

Faber-Castel notes:

Ink colours will change from time to time, but at the time of this update (Mar 2026) the colours available are: Carbon Black, Stone Grey, Midnight Blue, Royal Blue, Lapislazuli Blue Cobalt Blue, Gulf Blue, Turquoise, Deep Sea Green, Viper Green, Moss Green, Olive Green, Hazelnut Brown, Cognac Brown, Burned Orange, India Red Garnet Red, Yozakura (Cherry Blossom), Electric Pink, Violet Blue.

Cobalt Blue

I first bought this colour thinking it would be a substitute for the old blue in the Parker Penman line of inks. Well not exactly, but there were elements that we similar. I loved the deep dark tone of this colour. I think it is such a serious colour. Anything you write just looks fantastic.

Good writing performance. No feathering. Not much shading, no sheen just a beautiful flat colour tone. Expect a bit longer in dry times from other colours. Much will depend on your nib and paper. I say that as part of the darkness my be because of some deep purple - I don't see a lot of it but descriptions of the ink often refer that that characteristic.

While not 100% permanent, the colour holds the European standard ISO 12757-2 which means it is indelible, document-proof ink. What does that mean, somewhat water-resistant. Written lines will remain visible when when exposed to water

Midnight Blue

Midnight Blue

I bought this colour as I like Blue-Black inks.  The colour I use the most is Waterman Blue/Black. This I found had way more black to the mix.

But it looks very good, especially when writing with a broad nib where if inks do not have enough saturation, the broad strokes can look washed out. Not with this colour.

While not 100% permanent, the colour holds the European standard ISO 12757-2 which means it is indelible, document-proof ink. What does that mean, somewhat water-resistant. Written lines will remain visible when when exposed to water.

I found this ink to similar in colour to Sailor's Blue-Black.

Royal Blue

Royal Blue

Some websites selling Graf-von-Faber-Castell ink lists Royal blue with the 12757-2 designation, this is erasable ink. The graf-von-faber-casell website is very clear that is is the one colour they produce in that catagory.

The colour did not have the punch I wanted, so I find I do not use this ink very much. The other blues are more compelling.

But performance wise, t is a smooth flowing ink that worked well in any pen I filled.

Indian Red

I like reds so of course I needed more than one colour in this line to try. My first response to the ink was favourable. It is a easy red to take, with the main difference been Garnet Red being the added warm tones on Indian Red.

Good flow,  I enjoyed writing with this ink. I found nib size and paper would yield different feels.

In the end, I decided if I am going to be reasonable, and cut down the number of bottles of ink I really need... hard to say that, I would stick with Garnet Red for this line.

Garnet Red

A true red, dark, crisp, clean. If you want a true red ink, this is one colour to consider. There is really no shading, and to my pleasure, no sheen to the ink.

While not 100% permanent, the colour holds the European standard ISO 12757-2 which means it is indelible, document-proof ink. What does that mean, somewhat water-resistant. Written lines will remain visible when when exposed to water.

Good performing ink, also said to a drier ink, required to hold the ISO 12757-2 rating, I found the ink had good flow, it was a pleasure to write with.
